A spectacular antique shell cameo dating from the late 1880s to 1900. Carved with great skill to depict the portrait of the beautiful Arethusa, who in greek mythology was a nereid (a water nymph).
Named after her is the Fountain of Arethus a natural fountain on the island of Ortygia in the historical centre of the city of Syracuse in Sicily. She was a patron goddess of northern Greece and the island of Sicily. A real beauty this cameo is in superb condition with fine detailed carving. Set into a fine and decorative 9ct gold with scrollwork around the edges.
