I have named this beautiful cameo'Victorian English Garden', highly detailed & carved from sardonyx shell. The most highly prized shell for carving is the emperor or queen's helmet shell, Cassis madagascariensis. This shell has white and dark brown layers and is known as sardonyx shell, and looks similar to the layered agate known as sardonyx. This shell is found in the waters of the Caribbean.
The carving is of a lady in flowing garb holding a harp, in a victorian garden setting with church and cottage in far distance. The yellow gold setting, marked 15CT is bordered with rope and having a straight pin & locking hook back. Very rare and very very old, its age unknown to me, I've had her in my own collection for nearly 13(+/-) years.....
This cameo with setting is in very good to excellent antique/vintage condition. From what I can determine in researches, 15CT was used in settings from the UK, from late 1800's but prior to 1932. According to the article, the 15CT Hallmark was discontinued in England as a gold standard in 1932 with the Commonwealth member countries soon following. The item "Beautiful Antique Shell Cameo Pin in gold setting(15CT)Victorian English Garden" is in sale since Sunday, July 2, 2017.
